Why Accurate Wallpaper Calculation Matters
Wallpaper is expensive and dye lots vary. Running out mid-wall means mismatched seams. Our wallpaper calculator considers pattern repeat, wall dimensions, and openings to give you the exact roll count — including a smart waste buffer for matching patterns.
Whether you're searching "how many rolls of wallpaper for a 12x12 room" or "wallpaper with pattern repeat calculator", this tool provides professional-grade accuracy without the spreadsheet hassle.
- Strip calculation: (Wall Height + Pattern Repeat) determines how many full strips per roll.
- Coverage: Roll Length ÷ Strip Length = Strips per Roll (rounded down).
- Total strips needed: Wall Width ÷ Roll Width (rounded up).
Calculations are local and precise. Always measure twice!
How Pattern Repeat Affects Quantity
- No repeat (0): Strips can be cut to exact wall height. Least waste.
- Straight match: Pattern aligns horizontally. Add repeat length to each strip.
- Drop match: Pattern offset by half. Our calculator adds full repeat for safety.
- Standard roll: 20.5 in wide × 33 ft long = approx 56 sq ft (before waste).
European rolls are typically 21 in × 33 ft (metric equivalent 0.53 m × 10.05 m). Adjust inputs accordingly.
Wallpaper FAQ
Pattern repeat is the vertical distance before the design repeats. To match seams, you must cut each strip longer, which uses more paper. Enter the number from the label.
For single accent walls, yes. For full rooms, it's safer not to subtract small openings because the leftover pieces are often unusable due to pattern matching.
A double roll (standard US) contains 33 linear feet. Depending on wall height and repeat, you typically get 3-4 full-height strips per double roll.
Yes. Keep one unopened roll for future repairs. If you don't, and the pattern is discontinued, you'll never match it perfectly.
