How This Royalty Calculator Works

Understanding publishing economics is critical for creators. This tool models traditional book royalties (hardcover/paperback/ebook tiers), self-publishing platforms (Amazon KDP), and streaming music payouts. All figures are based on industry averages and can be customized.

  • Traditional royalties: Hardcover ~10-15%, Paperback ~6-10%, Ebook ~25% of net.
  • Self-publishing: Kindle 70% royalty (minus delivery fee), print cost deducted.
  • Streaming: Spotify ~$0.003-$0.005 per stream, Apple Music ~$0.007-$0.01.
  • Advances: Deducted from future royalties until "earned out".

Royalty & Publishing FAQ

How much do authors make per book?

Traditional: ~$1.50-$3 per hardcover, $0.75-$1.50 per paperback. Self-pub: ~$2-$5 per ebook (at $2.99-$9.99 price).

How many streams to make $1000?

On Spotify, approximately 250,000-350,000 streams (at $0.003-$0.004 per stream). Apple Music requires fewer (~100,000-150,000).

What is an advance against royalties?

An upfront payment that must be "earned out" through sales. You won't receive additional royalties until sales exceed the advance.

Do I need a literary agent?

For traditional publishing, yes — they negotiate better terms and take ~15%. For self-publishing, no agent is needed.
