Why Pet Portion Control Matters

Over 50% of pets are overweight, leading to joint issues and diabetes. Our pet food calculator uses veterinary guidelines (based on MER and RER formulas) to determine how much to feed your dog or cat. Unlike vague feeding charts, we consider activity level, body condition score, and food calorie density.

Whether you're searching "dog feeding amount by weight" or "cat portion size wet food", this tool provides a science-backed, personalized plan.

  • RER (Resting Energy Requirement): 70 × (weight in kg)^0.75
  • MER (Maintenance Energy Requirement): RER × activity factor × body condition factor
  • Portion calculation: MER ÷ food calorie density = daily cups/cans

Always consult your veterinarian for specific dietary needs.

Activity & Condition Multipliers

  • Activity: Low (1.2), Moderate (1.4), High (1.6-2.0 for working dogs)
  • Body Condition: Underweight (1.2), Ideal (1.0), Overweight (0.8)
  • Dry food conversion: 1 cup ≈ 100-120g (varies by kibble size).
  • Wet food: Typically 70-120 kcal per 3oz can. Mixed feeding uses 50/50 ratio.

For cats, the formula is similar but with a slightly lower activity factor range (1.0-1.4).

Pet Feeding FAQs

How do I know if my pet is overweight?

You should be able to feel the ribs with light pressure, and see a visible waist from above. If ribs are buried under fat, reduce portions by 10-15%.

Should I include treats in the daily portion?

Treats should not exceed 10% of daily calories. Subtract treat calories from the calculated portion to avoid overfeeding.

My cat only eats wet food. How do I adjust?

Select "Wet" and enter the kcal per can from the label. The calculator will output cans per day. Most cats need 180-220 kcal daily.

How often should I recalculate?

Recalculate every 2-4 weeks for puppies/kittens, and after any significant weight change (5%+). Adjust portions gradually.
