Why Accurate Paint & Flooring Estimates Matter
Buying too much paint or flooring wastes money. Buying too little means extra trips mid-project and potential dye-lot mismatches. Our paint calculator subtracts doors and windows, adjusts for multiple coats, and tells you exactly how many gallons to buy.
For flooring, we add a user-defined waste factor — essential for rooms with angles or when installing diagonally. Whether you're searching "how much paint for 12x12 room" or "flooring box calculator", this tool delivers precise, professional results.
- Wall area formula: Perimeter × Height − (Doors × 21 + Windows × 15) sq ft
- Paint gallons: Wall Area ÷ Coverage per Gallon × Number of Coats
- Flooring boxes: Floor Area × (1 + Waste%) ÷ Box Coverage
Calculations are local and instant. Adjust coverage based on your specific paint/primer.
Standard Measurements Used
- Standard interior door: 3 ft × 7 ft = 21 sq ft (or 0.9 × 2.1 m ≈ 1.9 sq m)
- Standard window: 3 ft × 5 ft = 15 sq ft (or 0.9 × 1.5 m ≈ 1.4 sq m)
- Paint coverage: One gallon typically covers 350-400 sq ft per coat.
- Waste factor: 5% for simple rectangles, 10-15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns.
For non-standard door/window sizes, you can adjust by adding or subtracting square footage manually before calculating.
DIY Painting & Flooring FAQs
Yes. Subtracting openings prevents overbuying paint. A typical room has 40-60 sq ft of openings — that's almost a quarter gallon saved.
Minimum 5-10% for waste. For complex layouts, angled walls, or large planks, add 15-20%. Always keep a full box for future repairs.
Select "L-Shape" and enter dimensions for both sections. The calculator automatically computes total area without double-counting the overlap.
Yes, select "Meters" as the unit. Coverage values are still in square feet per gallon — we convert automatically. (1 sq m ≈ 10.76 sq ft)
